Shohei Ohtani is a professional baseball player from Japan, celebrated as one of the most unique and talented athletes in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Born on July 5, 1994, in Oshu, Iwate, Japan, Ohtani showed extraordinary promise as both a pitcher and a hitter from a young age. He gained national attention during his high school years, throwing pitches over 100 mph and dominating at the plate. In 2012, he signed with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), where he became a two-way sensation.
In Japan, Ohtani excelled on both sides of the ball, earning the Pacific League MVP award in 2016 and leading his team to a Japan Series championship. In 2017, he announced his intent to play in MLB, signing with the Los Angeles Angels. Despite early injuries, Ohtani quickly made history, winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2018.
Ohtani’s breakout MLB season came in 2021, when he became the first player in over a century to dominate as both a pitcher and hitter in the same season. He hit 46 home runs, drove in 100 RBIs, stole 26 bases, and recorded a 3.18 ERA with 156 strikeouts as a pitcher. For his unprecedented performance, Ohtani was unanimously named the American League MVP. Known as "The Japanese Babe Ruth," Ohtani continues to redefine the possibilities of a two-way player in modern baseball. Off the field, he is admired for his humility, work ethic, and global appeal, serving as an ambassador for the sport and inspiring fans worldwide.
